MY BRAIN IS CAPABLE OF TRULY AMAZING THINGS.

What I wish I knew when I was younger was that my entire 20s were basically going to be dedicated to pursuing this path and that it would look very different from the twenties of my friends. I wish I knew when I was younger was just how much time it was going to take to become a doctor.

SAVING LIVES

I am most proud of doing work that literally saves lives. Every day, our work seeks to help people live healthier, longer lives. When a new product hits the shelves, I know we did worked hard to make that happen.

WHAT'S THE COOLEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

MAKING DISCOVERIES

"The coolest part of my job is seeing life-saving discovering being imagined every day. Even if most of those ideas fail, it's still amazing to work with people who are coming up with the next big discovery."

"I think what is most challenging is the pace of the patients. I only get 10 minutes to see each patient and I think it's challenging to sometimes get everything in in those 10 minutes. So certainly there could be backups during the day and patients can be a little bit upset and it's hard to kind of stay on track and keep everybody satisfied. But I always do my absolute best to sort of try to keep that out of my head.

When I'm with the patient, I always try to be really in the zone with them, listen to them, give them the time they deserve. And then over time, the patients get to know that you as a doctor, you really care, right? So if they have to wait a little bit for you, they're okay with that. But that's probably the most challenging thing on a day to day basis, right? I think you kind of learn to live with it a little bit and you learn not to stress about it. Right? So I try to just not worry about it and just focus on what I'm doing in the moment when I'm with the patient, it's my one on one time with them."

But dermatology is actually a really cerebral field as well. We actually study over 4000 diseases of not just your skin, but also your hair and nails, too, that you learn during your residency training.

It's also a very serious field because of melanoma in particular. Melanoma is one of the deadliest skin cancers, and if you don't catch it early, it certainly could be life-threatening for people. Melanoma detection is probably the number one most serious thing I do and the most common thing I do on a day to day basis."
